The KMS Story

Kuhl Machine Shop Ltd. is centrally located in Grey County in the Hamlet of Keady on a Century Old Farmstead, built by Dr. Brennan in 1888.  A direct descendant of the original “Keady Kuhl’s”, William David Kuhl (Dave), a Master Machinist, Certified Welder, and Industrial Millwright Mechanic by Trade, established Kuhl Machine Shop in his garage in 1989.

The original expansion from Dave’s garage to a new 60-foot Shop occurred in 1996.  By 2000 the Shop was not big enough to accommodate the ever-growing business and a 100-foot extension was added to offer more space for upgraded equipment, an office and additional metal storage.  The Plate Shop was added in 2000 to provide organization to the shear and bend services we offer and to maintain organization for our plate stock.

Since then, KMS has grown substantially and provides many local communities with consistent quality welding, fabricating, millwright service, hydraulic cylinder build/repair, mobile welding and custom machining.

2008 brings about more growth with the scheduled addition of a custom Paint Booth.  Building will commence in the Spring/Summer and will focus on providing a safe and environmentally conscious area to provide custom painting services.

Employing 12 experienced local trades people, Kuhl Machine Shop Ltd. honors the Grey County tradition of supporting their community and it’s workforce.  With many local suppliers and customers in Owen Sound, Port Elgin, Southampton, Collingwood and Tiverton, Kuhl Machine Shop Ltd. has become the first choice for custom machining and fabricating in Grey, Bruce and Simcoe Counties.

Dave Kuhl spends much of his time meeting with his customers face to face.  Dave’s conscientious effort to build lasting relationships with his customers and his drive to achieve and grow his business are two key elements to Kuhl Machine Shop Ltd.’s success.  Safety, Quality Workmanship and Continuous Improvement have always been the daily focus at KMS.  Dave believes in providing his staff with the opportunities to learn new skills and grow along with and share in the pride of Kuhl Machine Shop Ltd’s success.

As an ISO:9001 Registered Company KMS maintains strict Safety and Quality Standards and focuses on improving daily processes and improved communication from the front line, all the way through to the shop floor to ensure your needs are met.

All of our Staff participates in annual WHMIS Training and we are constantly upgrading our Fork Truck, Confined Space, Overhead Crane, Fall Arrest, First Aid and Aerial Lift Training.  Working together as a team we complete monthly safety walks and maintain many processes and procedures to ensure our safety everyday in the Shop and while on site.

Moving Forward
Implementation of a new custom-made software program called EQWAMS has changed the office environment and lightened the paperwork load.  More changes and updates are yet to come this year with the development of a new Inventory and Purchasing Module.  Improved efficiency in documentation when taking in the scope of the job impacts the quality and accuracy of what we make, and ensures you receive the best results.

The next few years bring about many changes for KMS.  There is a definite shift in the various types of customers we attract.  We have maintained our roots by quickly assisting local farmers and fellow entrepreneurs with emergency repairs.  We appreciate and respond quickly with immediate service to our on-site Millwright and Mobile Welding customers.  We continue to support the many manufacturers in the area by providing immediate repair service, any time of the day!  This year we welcome a new group of Natural Resource and Energy Customers who have made this area their home.
